Family Sponsorship
Canada is a great place to reunite with family and loved ones. Under the Family Class Sponsorship Program, a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident can sponsor a family member to come to Canada. They can sponsor the following:
- Parents and Grandparents
- Spouse or common-law partners
- Dependent children
To sponsor a family member, the sponsor must be over 18 years old, a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident living in Canada.
Spouses and Dependent Children
To sponsor a spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner, you would have to be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen or PR, and financially stable to support them and yourself. To sponsor a dependent child, the child must be under the age of 22 and not married. If the child is over the age of 22 and still dependent due to a health or other condition, he/she may qualify to be sponsored as a dependent child.
There are two different applications for spousal sponsorship:
- Overseas sponsorship: partner living outside of Canada
- In-land sponsorship: partner living in Canada
Parent and Grandparents
Many Canadian citizens and PR sponsor their parents for the PR program. To do this, the sponsor must be 18 years or older, must be a Canadian citizen or PR, and sign an agreement that acknowledges your promise to provide for the basics needs of the family members of 20 years.
